Hey All…

I can’t believe the Regional Season is almost over and the Championship Season is upon us. Some teams will be looking to end their season in the next few weeks, while others are hitting the halfway mark. It’s an exciting time for all clubs and players. There are thoughts of regional championships, underdog wins, or that moment of glory in front of a big crowd. Volleyball is unlike any sport. The excitement it carries is unmatched, especially at the juniors level. As a spectator, you may not know the game very well or all the intricacies involved, but you know what a straight down spike looks like, what a monster block does or how great a tremendous dig is. You know when all is on the line and a team is playing at it’s best. Players, parents and spectators can cheer when things go amazing and hope when they’re not. Juniors volleyball has changed and it’s changed forever and for the better. Players no longer play club for “fun”… they are serious athletes that have a goal in mind and a path to achieve it. They spend extra hours in the gym, they watch videos online, they find the the best players to compare themselves with, they go to camps and they play the game as much as they can. If your goal is to achieve greatness… you cannot do it with mediocrity… you cannot do it less than somebody else. You have to set the bar, maintain it and move it when necessary. The word “success” is not universal and has many different applications. In our game of volleyball.. it could be when the player finally mastered their overhand serve after practicing it all season. It could be beating a rival team or running a super tempo offense effectively. It could be finishing first in their division. It could be learning how to be a great teammate. There are so many successes available in the game of volleyball and now is the time to achieve them.      It’s Championship Season!!  – Richard

CoachRey.com

by Coastal Classic Volleyball on February 9, 2012

If you’ve been a part of the volleyball world, you may have stumbled across the website www.coachrey.com hosted by Winthrop Coach, Chuck Rey.  That’s what I did a few years ago when I came a across an article referencing friends Jake Elliott and Phil Dalhausser.  The article was well written, provided amazing insight on blocking and just good volleyball “talk”.  CoachRey.com instantly became one of my favorite volleyball websites and one of the few I subscribe to, actually the only one.  From there we randomly met him at the AAU Championships in Orlando and I truly felt like I was meeting a legend in the volleyball world.  There are a lot of websites out there that have a lot of great content, but there are few coming from the trenches of volleyball.. from the heart and soul of our sport and his website encompasses this.  His passion for growing our beloved sport of volleyball is unmatched and he truly is an ambassador to the youth movement.  If you get a chance… check out his website www.coachrey.com.

Oh yeah and he endorsed the tournament as well!!

Coastal Classic Volleyball Tournament

coastal classic volleyball tournament 300x185 Coastal Classic Volleyball Tournament volleyballAlong the way, you meet good people. The people behind the Coastal Classic Volleyball Tournament are some of those good people. I met Richard Knott and Aly Pompeani through one of volleyball’s unfortunate experiences, the sudden passing of Ranse Jones.  I donated to help with Ranse’s fight and in return, got a great T-shirt.  I was wearing that T-shirt when I registered my Carolina Juniors Club Team at AAUs in Orlando when a typical Florida mid-afternoon thunderstorm came flying in. Many of the coaches were huddled under the baseball stadium when Aly introduced herself.  She recognized the t-shirt because she and her boyfriend Richard, both coaches at Grand Strand Juniors, designed the shirt and was helping to collect the funds for Ranse. Through that conversation in Orlando, Aly, Richard, and I have started one of those special friendships only volleyball can put together. People “on the outside” of our sport don’t understand why volleyball coaches and players do what we do for our sport. It’s because of bonds like these that makes our sport genuine and what we do so special.

Aly and Richard, with Alex Sing, through Grand Strand Juniors are doing a great job growing the game in the Myrtle Beach area. Grand Strand Juniors will be hosting an AAU Super-Regional called the Coastal Classic Volleyball Tournament. Who wouldn’t want to spend some time at the beach when your team isn’t playing?

May is a great time of year in Myrtle Beach. Go to their website and register your team now!
